CALIFORNIA TOUR / SOUTH
May 5-11, 2012*
* new dates - now 6 riding days!
A late spring
tour loop tour from San Diego to the Anza Borrego Desert! Arrive
in San Diego on May 5 and celebrate Cinco de Mayo with dinner
at an Old Town Mexican restaurant just blocks from our hotel.
On Sunday you’ll ride north along the Pacific, then inland
to the small town of Ramona. Here’s where it starts to get
quiet, and after Ramona you won’t see another traffic signal
for days. The next day you’ll ride through remote countryside
and climb Montezuma Pass. The reward is descending the longest
sustained downhill in the county to Borrego Springs! Camp there
at a great resort with two pools (there’s also a hotel option
at the resort). There are hiking trails at the nearby state park,
and be sure to take an evening stroll - the night desert sky is
full of thousands of stars. We've added a day and a new destination
for us - Agua Caliente is south of Borrego Springs along a historic
stage coach route, and we'll camp there at a county park with
two outdoor mineral pools and an indoor therapeutic spa. There
are great hiking trails here, too. The two days in the desert
have short mileage to allow time to soak or hike ... whatever
your preference. Riding west again, we'll take a break at Scissors
Crossing, a wayside with water and willows that I know had to
be a welcome sight to the early settlers. Our route passes through
the Cigarette Hills and climbs Banner Grade to Julian, the mountain
town famous for all things apple. The next day you’ll ascend
to Mt. Laguna, followed by another fantastic descent to Japatul
Valley (pronounced “hop-a-tool”). Close the loop by
heading west to finish on Thursday in San Diego.

With
the May date we’re attempting to find that perfect weather
window, but you never know what the weather goddess will send
our way. Borrego can be very warm in May but the mountain towns
can still experience some late-season cool weather. Julian is
at a 4000-foot saddle, and the road summit of Mt. Laguna is
about 6000 feet in elevation.
The
price includes 3 hotels (including the arrival day of May 5),
3 campgrounds (hotel option is easy at Borrego Springs but there
are no hotels near Agua Caliente), 6 breakfasts, 2 dinners (San
Diego on arrival night and Agua Caliente), road snacks for 6
days, support crew and a mechanic. When dinners are on your
own there are options within walking and/or easy cycling distance)
For 8-13 cyclists there will be one sag/gear truck and at 14
people we’ll add another support vehicle.
Parking has been arranged in San Diego during the tour for about
$12/day (contract confirmed soon), and there’s a complementary
airport shuttle for those who fly.
We’ll run this tour only if we have a minimum of 8 registered
cyclists, and the price will be reduced when we reach 14 people.

CALIFORNIA
TOUR / NORTH
August 12-19, 2012
Hotel or camp options
One
of our most popular past routes, this loop tour travels
through Marin County to the coast, then the Russian River
and the Napa and Sonoma Wine Countries. One of the reasons
it got such good reviews is that we stay two nights in most
places. On the layover days you can ride the supported ride
we’ve mapped out, explore the area on your own or
just relax.
First
you’ll ride from Novato over the coast ridge to Olema,
right next door to Point Reyes National Seashore. Guerneville
on the Russian River is our next stop, and we stay there
two nights. On your extra day you can take an easy ride
to Jenner on the coast or tackle the infamous Kings Ridge
to Fort Ross. Our next destination is the famous Calistoga
at the head of Napa Valley. You can spend your layover day
riding to Pope Valley, enjoying spa treatments or sampling
Calistoga’s great eating spots. Then cycle to historic
Petaluma, a town with many beautiful Victorian homes. We
stay here two days, also, so you can pedal some of the best
cycling roads anywhere. Finally we bicycle back to Novato
and the finish.
This
year’s tour offers both a camping and a hotel option. |
